Challenges

Designing an application that had a lot of features and could run on both the iOS and Android platforms posed certain difficulties to our team. Among other things, we were particularly concerned about making sure that the application runs efficiently and smoothly regardless of the device that it is being used on, that the application offers proper protection of data, and that the application itself is scalable.

Goal

The objective was to provide a mobile app to the Bigbasket customers that would make their day-to-day grocery purchases fast, convenient, and hassle-free. The idea was to provide an experience that would save their time, make the transaction process safe, and be equally user-friendly for low-end mobiles and high-end smartphones.

Background

BigBasket is the leading e-grocery portal in India, based out of Bangalore, and reaching out to its customers in many cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. Offering more than 20,000 products covering all aspects, right from fresh fruits and vegetables to meats, fish, and even their own branded food products, BigBasket has established itself as the one-stop destination for all online grocery needs. BigBasket is not just an online retailer but offers much more in the form of customized shopping lists, recipes available on bbCookbook, lifestyle advice available on bbLifestyle, and even multilingual options to cater to its wide customer base. As the demand for mobile applications for the growing BigBasket customer base became imperative, BigBasket approached Orestes.

Our Approach

01

Testing and Optimization

After the launch of the app, it underwent several rounds of testing to identify problems and improve the performance of the app.

02

User-Oriented Approach to Research and Design

The initial step undertaken by the team was user research to capture the actual customer experience of creating shopping lists, replenishing items, and completing orders in the app that was intuitive right from the start.

03

Multi-Language Approach

The app was developed with a focus on providing access for customers who speak different languages and come from various regions.

04

Agile Methodology

The process of development was built around the tenets of agile methodology, with the team working in sprints using customer feedback.

05

Scalability Architecture of the Backend

The backend of our app was created anew because we needed something that could handle many transactions and traffic but not lose its performance.

06

End-to-End Protection for Personal Data

The customers’ personal data and payments were all encrypted and secure through advanced security mechanisms.
